Shannon Way Opening Coverage

We want to say a huge thank you to the Kerryman for their coverage of the opening of the Asdee section of the Shannon Way Trail & to Domnick Walsh for his lovely photos from the day. The trail is a brilliant, safe amenity for our community & any walking enthusiasts or visitors to the area.

The event took place on the Saturday morning of our Festival weekend & we were delighted to have a large number of locals & invited guests. Kerry County Council, who were responsible for the fantastic work carried out before Christmas, were singled out for their work & support once again.

As a mark of our thanks for the cooperation of the landowners, Jim O’Connor, Tomas Walsh & Tom Mulvihill cut the ribbon to mark the opening. We also recently had a lovely bench installed following grant funding from the Tullahinell wind farm, for which we are very grateful.

John Kennedy thanked everyone in attendance & highlighted the popularity of the walk since the work had been completed. Councillor Mike Foley spoke on behalf of the council & we thank him for his part in the funding being awarded. Jim O’Connor spoke at the halfway point, telling us about the history of the trail & the surroundings.

Below we have lovely photos of the trail & opening, courtesy of Domnick Walsh. We also have the recording of John Kennedy speaking about the trail with Jerry O’Sullivan on Radio Kerry last week. A big thanks to Jerry & Radio Kerry for their coverage, which has generated more interest in the trail.

There are further upgrade works being applied for at present, which will see the section from Ballybunion, via Cnoc an Oir, to Larha & from Tullahinell to Tarbert, via Ballylongford also upgraded. We also hope to make progress on our river walk & recreation area in the year ahead, providing another important & attractive amenity for our community & all who visit here.
